Autobiographical Narrative
The world has an enormous impact on your dreams and aspirations. You might want to help aid people after a giant natural disaster. Or you might want to visit the sick in a hospital or in a retirement home. These feeling of wanting to lend a hand comes from how you live everyday life. My family, community, and school has definitely impacted me. They shaped the way I view the world and influenced my dreams.
My family, well loved ones in general, have always supported me. They believe I can become anything I set my mind to. My family is smaller than the average. I'm an only child and live with my mom. My dad passed away when I was one and a half years old. However, I grew extremely close with my Godparents. They, having only one daughter as well, have always treated me and thought of me as their child. My Godfather plays the role of my dad ever since I can remember. He has given me the love any father could give his daughter. My family has always been proud of my accomplishments but I want, and will, become someone who makes them even prouder of what they raised.
My community has changed not just me but everyone living here as well. I feel as if everyone in this area is trapped from the outside world. Mostly everyone living here, including me, are Hispanic and speak Spanish. Being bilingual allows you to communicate with more people giving you a glimpse of other people's lives. I've learned many new things by speaking to people, especially those who differ from me. I feel a major challenge for high school graduates nearby is going on to college. Since the majority comes from field working parents, many do not further their education. They tend to stay home and work with their parents. Some are interested in continuing studies and go to community college. Some graduate while others drop. I do not want to and refuse to do the same. I want to change this common view in the community.
Family and the community has influenced my decision making. I have never really thought of going away to college. Being the only child, I was afraid of leaving my mom by herself. One cousin told me, "I didn't want to leave. If I left, I was going to put a lot of debt on my parents and they were going to suffer from many things since I help them with many things. I thought about leaving all the time. Sometimes you just have to be selfish and do what you need to do." I've thought about his words whenever the thought of college came to mind. I've been academically challenging myself in school by pushing to earn better scores in my classes to prepare for AP classes and for college. My high school has been encouraging students to increase their education and leave to college by offering classes similar to many majors and careers. I personally am not sure what I want to become. I'm interested in the medical field. I want to be able to help people in the community everyday.
In one way or another, everyone and everything in my life has shaped my dreams and views on the world. They helped me grow into the person I am today. I want to become someone in the community who my loved ones can be proud of.
